APA: “stop trying to convert gays”

The American Psychological Association has declared that there is no evidence that changing your orientation is even possible, much less helpful, in reconciling your religious beliefs with your sexual orientation. They are in effect telling religious folks to stop trying to convert gays, as the evidence actually points to such therapies inducing depression and sucicidal tendencies in homosexuals.

Judith Glassgold, a Highland Park, N.J., psychologist who chaired the task force, said she hoped the document could help calm the polarized debate between religious conservatives who believe in the possibility of changing sexual orientation and the many mental health professionals who reject that option.

“Both sides have to educate themselves better,” Glassgold said in an interview. “The religious psychotherapists have to open up their eyes to the potential positive aspects of being gay or lesbian. Secular therapists have to recognize that some people will choose their faith over their sexuality.”

No word yet on whether or not religious institutions like the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (or NAMBLA) will rush to close their doors. Place your bets.

Hat tip to The Good Atheist, who also includes a portrait of a sexy black Jesus in bondage. No seriously.

  • How long until someone makes claims of the APA simply being a tool of the LGBT agenda, or part of the Secularist’s agenda, or some such nonsense? (I’m sure it’s too late for that in other arenas, I was considering here, specifically.)

  • Zdenny would like me to point out he’s already written exactly what you’re suggesting. Only he also mistakes a previous APA report saying that there’s no one gay gene, for a report saying “homosexuality isn’t genetic”.

No, you still don’t get posting rights, Zdenny, until you meet my challenge. I don’t know why you keep trying. You have time to get everything else in the universe wrong, why don’t you try writing about something you think is wrong but everyone else on the planet with any intellect knows is right?

  • It’s way to late in most arenas Dan, the religious nuts have been making that claim since before I was born, when the APA came out against the notion of homosexuality as a mental illness…

  • I remembered seeing this a couple months ago, and had to go look for it again when this topic came up. This video demonstrates exactly the type of mentality that we, as open-minded, caring, compassionate individuals, must fight against.

The fundamentalist Christians bigoted homophobes [ed. - Same thing, really] of today yearn for “the good old days”, not realizing that there was no such thing as “the good old days”, unless you take that term to mean a time when they found it much easier to hate without being called on it.

Without further adieu, please be sickened by “Boys Beware”.

  • Wow. Homosexuality = pedophilia and murder, and is a sickness, according to the 1950s. Sounds familiar… you think perhaps Christian homophobes are indoctrinated using 1950s public service videos?

  • [...] Lousy Canuck and Ed Brayton have coverage and conversation on the topic. [...]
